Beld (ベルド, Berudo) was one of the Six Heroes who saved Lodoss from the Demon King, and the Emperor of Marmo. Driven by the darkness within him and the subtle hints of Karla, He initiated the War of Heroes and killed his main rival and former ally King Fahn in a duel, before being killed himself by King Kashue of Flaim. His protégé Ashram obtained his sword, the Demon Sword “Soul Crusher”, and continued his late master's wish of conquering Lodoss.

Beld was once hailed as one of the strongest warriors on Lodoss, earning him the nickname “red-haired mercenary”. Because of this, the Duke of Skard hired him—along with his companion Wort—to train his talented son Nasher. He eventually joined the Hundred Heroes, a volunteer force assembled to fight the demon army, led by Nasher and scored several important victories against the demon army. He fought against the Demon King and was able to kill it with the Soul Crusher, but lost his love interest Flaus during the battle.

History[]

Born into the barbarian tribes of Marmo, Beld left as a young man and became a mercenary. His travels brought him to the small kingdom of Skard, in Moss, where he was hired as a captain of the prince’s guard, and taught the prince to fight. Here, he met Wort, a young sorcerer who had become the court mage. However, after the prince betrayed Wort by stealing his most secretive magical research, Wort and Beld both left and traveled Lodoss as mercenaries.

The knowledge stolen from Wort led the prince to summon the Demon King and unleash havoc on all of Lodoss. Beld and Wort joined with the warrior priestess of Falis, Flaus; Fahn, captain of the Holy Knights of Valis; Flaibe, the king of the dwarven Kingdom of Stone; Neese, the priestess of Marfa; and the nameless warrior-mage.

In the course of their journey, Beld fell in love with Flaus, and it was she who inspired him to unite Lodoss. Though she hoped to be at his side to guide him to uniting the island, it was not to be. In the battle with the Demon King, Flaus sacrificed herself so that Falis would descend on her to smite the demon. Though she hoped that he would save her, Flaus only martyred herself.

Beld returned to Marmo, with the Demon King’s sword, Soul Crusher, and set into motion his plans for conquer. First, he brought his native people together beneath him, and allied himself with the dark elves. From the Forest of Darkness, he declared himself Emperor of Marmo, and set his sights on the cities of Marmo; Persei and Salvador.

Ashram would come to join him, and help him bring Marmo together under his will. Once Marmo was united, the invasion of Lodoss began. Beld swiftly conquered Kanon, and took regions of Valis and Alania as well. The war eventually brought Beld and Fahn to face each other. Soul Crusher had preserved Beld’s youth, and he defeated Fahn in their duel. However, as he rose victorious, an arrow struck him in the shoulder, and in that moment of the distraction, Fahn’s ally, King Kashue of Flaim, slew the wounded and distracted Beld.

Years later, during the War of the Destroyer’s Resurrection, Ashram, Pirotess and many of their Marmo followers leave Lodoss to find new land. They end up at Crystania and settle in a region they name Beldia (ベルディア, berudia), in honour of Emperor Beld. One of their shrines has a large mural of Emperor Beld, alongside a mural of Ashram. The animal god Barbas took control of Ashram's body when he set foot on Crystania, but struggled to suppress Ashram's strong soul from retaking his body. In order to suppress Ashram, Barbas appeared in Ashram's subconscious as Emperor Beld. This worked for some time, until Redon and Pirotess managed to help Ashram free from Barbas’ suppression.

Notes[]

  • In the 1990 OVA, Beld is killed by Karla when she sends a magic pillar of light to impale him. However, in the Grey Witch novel, he is not killed by Karla but is instead beheaded by Kashue during single combat after being distracted by a stray arrow. In Record of Lodoss War Next Generation: Unholy Apocalypse I[1], it is revealed that this arrow was shot by a hidden master archer, as ordered by Kashue.
  • He's the protagonist of the Dreamcast game: Lodoss War: Advent of Cardice.
