Fort of Mercenaries is the fifth episode of the Legend of Crystania manga and the fifth episode of the first tankōban in the Legend of Crystania manga series.
Synopsis[]
Boakes and Jenoba take Redon and the others to the stronghold of their mercenary group (called the Fang of the Animal). There, they are surprised to see Obier and Raifan. The two had been captured earlier by the mercenaries, but Obier won their freedom back by beating Rome in a duel. Boakes introduces Redon and the others to the mercenaries and hopes they will approve them, just like he has.[1]
Boakes explains to Redon that the Fang of the Animal is at war with Barbas, an animal god king who is known as the “Gods’ King”. When Redon inquires about “animal god kings”, Boakes explains that the gods who once walked this earth cast off their original bodies and sealed their souls in the bodies of animals. These “animal gods” created Crystania. Among the animal gods there are five animal god kings—Urus, the god of the foundation; Barbas, the god of rule; Rumiss, who protects the barrier; Bruza, the god of battle, and Feness, the god of the cycle.[2]
Each animal god has a tribe of followers. Boakes is part of the Tribe of the Mane, who follow the animal god Direon. Rome is part of the Tribe of the Sealers, who follow the animal god Urus. They travel all around Crystania to seal away any chaos and evil, the two most hated things in Crystania.[3] Redon asks about the cycle, and Boakes explains that its a history that is repeated every few hundred years. Everything that happens in Crystania, happens according to the fate set by the gods. Each time the cycle turns, the same events are repeated.[4] However, Barbas and his followers have left the cycle and are now trying to conquer Crystania by sheer force. Chaos and evil from outside Crystania, such as Redon, are a "disturbance" to the cycle.
Following his conversation with Boakes, Redon returns to the welcoming banquet. He begins feeling at home in Crystania, and Aderishia is glad to see him happy again. During the banquet, Nasare asks Boakes about Sheru. Boakes explains she holds the key to overthrow Barbas.[5]
That night, Redon wakes up from his sleep. When he goes outside, he sees a rejuvinated Sheru, who tells him to return to his own land. At that moment a voice is heard and the image of a god appears above the fort; Barbas has launched an attack on the fort.
