Flaibe

Flaibe (フレーベ, Furēbe) was the last king of the Stone Kingdom, a mighty underground settlement of dwarves. His kingdom was the first to fall when demons arose from the Labyrinth. He witnessed the demon forces wipe out his people and destroy his kingdom. He joined Nashers’ party and together with them destroyed the Demon King. He became one of the Six Heroes of Lodoss.

History[]

　The last king of the mighty Stone Kingdom, Flaibe’s nation was the first to fall when the demons rose up from the Labyrinth. Many of his people were slaughtered, while few escaped, and others fought. Flaibe battled the demons until he was the last man left. While he fought an arch demon, an armor clad warrior sorceress teleported him across Lodoss to Alania. Blooded and confused, he wandered into the city of Alan where he was found by Flaus, Beld, Fahn, and Wort, and soon Neese was sent to heal him. After his recuperation in Tarba, he joined them in their quest to battle the Demon King. Flaibe led the way into the ruins of the Kingdom of Stone, where they battled the archdemon who stole his throne. After the Demon King was slain, Flaibe was hailed as one of the Six Heroes.

　After the war, Flaibe wandered Lodoss, a king without a nation. Searching for the survivors of the Stone Kingdom, he hoped to rebuild his once proud nation. During the War of the Destroyer’s Resurrection he, together with his old friend Wort, joined the Flaim army in their fight against Alania, at the time ruled by Duke Raster. After the War of the Destroyer’s Resurrection, and the purification of Marmo, Flaibe reappeared on the island and decided that this would be the location of the new Stone Kingdom.

The name of Flaibe (フレーベ, Furēbe) has probably seen the most amount of different translations of any Lodoss main character; Fleve, Flebe, Flaive and Flaibe.
- Flaibe's name is written as "Flaive" in volume 3 of the Grey Witch manga.^[1] In volume 1 of the Grey Witch manga his name is written as "Flaibe".^[2] In The Lady of Pharis manga, translated by the same people who translated The Grey Witch manga, his name is consistently written as Flaibe in the many times the name is mentioned. Undoubtedly the one-time spelling of "Flaive" was a typing error (on most western keyboards the letters "V" and "B" are placed adjacent to each other).
- The name "Fleve" is given only once, which is in episode 5 of the 1990 OVA. A (short version) of a song about the Six Heroes is played during a banquet which mentiones Flaibe (as Fleve). Besides the (arguably erroneous) Flaive, the OVA is the only official translation that uses a "v" in Flaibe's name.
