The Hundred Heroes (百の勇者, hyaku no yūsha) were a volunteer army formed during the Demon War. The army consisted of humans, dwarves and elves. The formation was inspired by the heroics of the red-haired mercenary Beld, who was believed to have defeated a demon general and his gang in Raiden with his companions Flaus, Lucida and others. This marked the first known defeat of a significant demon. Following Beld's victory over the demon general, Aegis, the chairman of Raiden, gave a powerful speech echoing Beld's heroics. He believed that if Beld and his companions could defeat a demon general and its gang of demons, hundred heroes would be enough to deal with the entire demon army. This ignited a flood of volunteers. Eventually, the Hundred Heroes were summoned to Raiden and from there sent to Highland in Moss, where the demons were mostly concentrated. Nasher was appointed as leader of the volunteer force. Nasher took a detachment of 12.000 men of the Hundred Heroes, which he referred to as the Hero corps (勇者隊, yūsha-tai), to liberate Russen with the Allied Order of Knights. One month after liberating Russen, the Hundred Heroes liberate the city of Muskett as well.
After Nasher's death, the Twin Princes Frey and Risen are given command of the Hundred Heroes. They each lead their own Hero corps to Skard, succesfully liberating it with the Allied Order of Knights. The Twin Princes died in the Deepest Labyrinth, after clearing the way for the last seven surviving heroes to the Hall of the Demon King. The Six Heroes are said to be the last of the Hundred Heroes who remained at the end of the Demon War. The others either died or left the army.
Notes[]
- In Japanese, the Hundred Heroes is written as 百の勇者, while its last remaining members, the Six Heroes, is written as 六英雄. In the former "Heroes" is 勇者, while in the latter the same word is 英雄. This is because in Japan there is a distinction between a hero who has set out to complete a task, and a hero who succeeded in completing his task. The Hundred Heroes are heroes because they challenge a mighty army, but the Six Heroes are the only ones who completed the task of defeating the army, thus are written as "英雄".
- In The Lady of Pharis manga the Hundred Heroes are briefly mentioned when Fairo no longer pursues becoming a member. The name is written slightly different—百人隊 (hyaku hito-tai),[1]—which simply means "One Hundred Man Army".[2]
