Ifrit (イフリート ifurīto or エフリート efurīto) is the king spirit of fire. At the time of the ancient kingdom of Kastuul he, together with the king spirit of wind, Jinn, were part of a covenant formed by the Flaim summoner Azzard, to fight against the sorcerers of Kastuul. The sorcerers managed to seal away both Ifrit and Jinn and had the tribes believe the other tribe was to blame for it, creating centuries of hostility between the tribes.

Azzard’s covenant cost him his own life. Centuries later a descendant of Azzard and heir of the covenant, Azumo of the Fire tribe, released Ifrit so that his powers could be used in their fight against the Wind tribe.

Ifrit is known as the "Fire Demon" (ほのおの魔神), because he has a demon-like appearance.

History[]

Five hundred years ago Ifrit was summoned by the great summoner Azzard to help his tribe in their fight against the sorcerers of Kastuul. Azzard was from Flaim, which at the time consisted of two tribes; the Tribe of Fire and the Tribe of Wind. Azzard formed a covenant with Ifrit and another king spirit, Jinn, so they would lend him their power. The covenant resulted in Flaim’s earth losing its fertility, turning it into a desert, and Azzard losing his life.[1] After his death the covenant remained and would be inherited by his descendants. Ifrit’s fire was used to destroy the enemy forces. To deal with Ifrit, the Kastuulians created an artifact in the shape of a vase and sealed away Ifrit. Before this, they had already sealed Jinn. The Kastuulians convinced members of each tribe that the other tribe had betrayed them and were responsible for their guardian deities being sealed. Ifrit’s seal was kept in the Temple of Ifrit in the east of Flaim.

Five hundred years later Ifrit was released by Azumo, a descendant of Azzard and inheritor of the covenant with Ifrit and Jinn.[2] Ifrit was summoned several times to fight on behalf of the Fire tribe against the Wind tribe, and he played a vital role in each of the Fire tribe’s victories. Ifrit required a sacrifice for his services; human female meat.

Ifrit was summoned again in the final battle between the two tribes. By that time Deedlit had managed to release Jinn and establish a new covenant. Ifrit did not believe Deedlit at first, but when she summoned Jinn, he accepted the new covenant and disappeared, leaving only a flame behind. [3] The lingering flame strikes Nardia, the leader of the Tribe of Fire, killing her. The flame, possibly affected by Nardia, transforms into a Phoenix, a legendary bird that appears once every 500 years and controls the power of rebirth.[4]

Years later, during the War of the Destroyer’s Resurrection, Ifrit is briefly summoned by Jiba in his fight against Spark and Ryna on Marmo.[5]

On Crystania, during the invasion of Iscaria by Beldia, Ifrit, together with the king spirits Jinn, Kraken and Behemoth are used to destroy the fortress of the Fang of the Animal as part of a "miracle" of the Gods’ King Barbas.[6]

Notes[]

  • Ifrit is mentioned (but never seen) in the Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight anime, where his name is spelled "Efreet" (episode 6) and "Ifreet" (episode 8). He is also mentioned in the DVD special edition booklet several times as "Ifrit".
