Legend of Lodoss (ロードス島伝説, rōdosu-tō densetsu) is a series of light novels written by Ryo Mizuno with illustrations by Akihiro Yamada. It serves as a prequel series to Record of Lodoss War and is set during the Demon War. It follows the adventures of the Dragon Knight Nasher, who led a volunteer force called the Hundred Heroes to war against an invasion of demons. Beld, Fahn and the other Six Heroes also played their part in the war as part of the Hundred Heroes, but contrary to popular belief, are supporting characters, rather than the main characters. In preparation to writing this story, Mizuno read many history books and biographies of historical people, for inspiration.[1]

Mizuno came up with the idea of a demon invasion from an ancient ruin while he was still a student (?-1986) and took notes of this idea. He lost those notes before he started Legend of Lodoss.[1] Mizuno intended the series to end with volume 4, which finished the story of the series' main character Nasher, but left out the Six Heroes' final battle against the Demon King in the Deepest Labyrinth. Mizuno explained that Legend of Lodoss was about Nasher first and foremost, and including any events after Nasher's story was completed, would impair Nasher's role as the protagonist.[2] In 2002, four years after volume 4, he finished volume 5, Saint of the Supreme God, the final volume, which featured the conclusion of the war against the Demon King in 125 pages. It featured a different cover design than the four with Nasher as the protagonist.

Record of Lodoss War: The Lady of Pharis, the manga adaptation by Yamada, is based on the Legend of Lodoss novels.

Legend of Lodoss RPG Replay (RPGリプレイ ロードス島伝説, RPG ripurei rōdosu-tō densetsu) is a light novel series written by written by Hiroshi Takayama and Group SNE, based on a draft (原案) by Ryo Mizuno. Published by Kadokawa Shoten under their label Kadokawa Sneaker G Bunko. Before published as light novels, the RPG replays were serialized in Comptiq magazine under the title TRPG Magazine Live New Record of Lodoss War: Demon War (TRPG誌上ライブ 新ロードス島戦記 魔神戦争, TRPG shijō raibu shin rōdosu-tō senki majin sensō). The serialization began about a year before the release of Prince of the Fallen Land.

The protagonist of the RPG replays is Milleus, a young man from “Dragon’s Eye” Highland, Moss, who wants to become a Dragon Knight. He forms a party with the thief Volk, the half-elf Thiel, the priestess Odia, and many others, and fights in the Demon War. Where the main Legend of Lodoss series mostly focusses on the demons in Moss, the RPG replays also focus on demon armies outside Moss. Characters from the main Legend of Lodoss novels such as Nasher and Duke Mycen, also appear, but their roles in the story are small.
