Overview[]
Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth is a 2D-style Metroidvania (action-exploration) videogame developed under the close supervision of original Record of Lodoss War creator Ryo Mizuno, depicting the previously unknown story of Deedlit and the events leading up to Record of Lodoss War: The Crown of the Covenant.
Story[]
Deedlit awakens suddenly in a mysterious, unknown place. Where am I? Why am I here? With nobody around to respond, her questions are met with only silence. Seeking answers, Deed eventually sets off on foot, alone... - Tagline for the game's story
Deedlit awakens in a mysterious labyrinth. She travels through six areas fighting enemies from her past, such as the dragons Bramd, Shooting Star, and Narse; Karla the Grey Witch; and villains from the Marmo empire, including Pirotess, Beld, and Ashram. Karla also uses her powers of illusion to force Deedlit to fight foes from Karla's past: the Demon King and Flaus. Deedlit also encounters former allies and traveling companions, including Parn, Etoh, Slayn, Ghim, Woodchuck, and King Kashue.
At the same time that Deedlit is trying to find a way out of the labyrinth, Pirotess attempts to use the Soul Crystal Ball and the blood of Parn to resurrect Ashram. However, her attempt is only partially successful, resulting in the "Imperfect Ashram" boss that resembles a zombie in appearance and attack patterns.

In reality, the labyrinth was created from Deedlit's memories and feelings by the king spirit of loneliness, Nihil, which has been preying on Deedlit's grief following the death of Parn, her last living companion and the one she loved. By defeating the Memory and Nihil bosses, Deedlit is able to break free of her loneliness and accept the truth of Parn's death. Upon waking up, she encounters Leaf, who tells her that the rest of the elves in the village were worried she would never wake up. Deedlit resolves to capture Parn's memory by writing a song.
The story subsequently ends with a plot tease for the The Crown of the Covenant novel with the appearance of Lyle, the protagonist of that novel.
Gameplay[]
Gameplay in Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth is primarily based on both Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, the prototype for the modern Metroidvania genre, and Ikaruga, an arcade-style shoot 'em up game which uses a swapping system on which the Sylph-Salamander swapping system in Wonder Labyrinth was modeled[1].
Deedlit can use both a sword, axe, or other melee weapon and a bow and arrow. These can be swapped out for other weapons that are purchased from the shop run by Ghim or picked up as items or from enemy drops along the way. She also gains different magic spells along the way, which cost MP.
The Sylph and Salamander spirit system comprises a core part of the gameplay. Spirit levels start at 1 and can be leveled up to 3 by defeating enemies while the other spirit is equipped. Swapping to a spirit that is level 3 will result in automatic HP recovery, but getting hit will result in the level dropping to 2 and then to 1. While using Sylph, the wind spirit, wind-based attacks do less damage. When the fire spirit Salamander is in use, fire-based attacks do less damage.
