Record of Lodoss War: The Bewitching Magic Stone is a 1989 cassette book released by KADOKAWA Cassette Book. The story, written by Ryo Mizuno and Hitoshi Yasuda, takes place during the Grey Witch novel. While Parn and his companions journey from Valis to Moss to find Wort and learn more about Karla, they come across Uzu village which is under threat by trolls. Parn and his companions decide to help the village, and learn of its secrets.

Later in 1989 a second cassette book was released, called The Fated Sorcerer.

In the novel Record of Lodoss War: The Kings’ Holy War, while Parn and his companions are travelling from Moss to Valis and near Uzu village on the way, Parn briefly remembers the events of this audio drama.[1]

Summary[]

On their way to Wort’s tower to learn more about Karla, Parn and his companions stumble upon a young man named Ares and a young woman named Lydia who are under attack by a troll. Parn dispatches the troll and the party is taken to the young people's nearby village called Uzu. Ares is the son of the Village Chief and a candidate for the next chief. He aspires to become a mage so he can protect the village without violence, but the Village Chief rather has his son pick up a sword.

The party is staying in Uzu village to exterminate the trolls, who reside in a cave nearby Uzu. They learn from the Village Chief of the Philosopher’s Stone that is hidden in the cave. It's a very powerful item. The stone was sealed at the end of the age of the ancient kingdom of Kastuul. Since then, it has been sealed without ever being used.

To not let the trolls obtain the stone, the party is tasked to lure them out of the cave and fight them, while Ares sneaks inside the cave to get the Philosopher’s Stone. When Ares is cornered inside the cave by a troll he is forced to use the Philosopher’s Stone to destroy the cave and gets fascinated by the relic. His father believes the stone should be kept safe in a Marfa temple, but Ares sneaks in his father's room to steal it. He is caught by his father, and ends up stabbing him. Ares tries to escape the village with Lydia, but Parn interferes and Ares escapes alone, with the Philosopher’s Stone. Etoh saves the Village Chief, who then urges the party to save Ares.

When the party finds Ares, Parn tries to persuade Ares. Parn, like Ares, was also ridiculed when he was younger. Ares casts attack magic on the party, but suddenly Lydia throws herself inbetween, and takes the magic blast. When Ares learns that the Village Chief is safe and that both the chief and Lydia were worried about him, Ares is shocked. Lydia eventually dies, and Ares goes on a wandering journey.
