Record of Lodoss War: The Crown of the Covenant (ロードス島戦記 誓約の宝冠) is an ongoing light novel series written by Ryo Mizuno. The series takes place roughly 100 years after the events of the original Record of Lodoss War novels. Since those events, Lodoss had been in a state of peace. To preserve that peace all rulers were given a crown (a diadem) to which the kings vowed not to engage in war. One hundred years later, a crown prince of Flaim refuses to wear the crown, signalling his intent to break away from the covenant. The story surrounds arounds a new main character called Lyle, a crown prince from the kingdom of Marmo, who wants to preserve the peace on Lodoss island.
The first volume of The Crown of the Covenant was released in 2019 as part of the thirty year anniversary of the series. Mizuno came up with the idea for The Crown of the Covenant about 10 years before its release, but didn't have an opportunity to write it at the time. However, the Crystania: Legend of the Drifters novels, released from 1993—1996, already mention a war of aggression on Lodoss island that took place 100 years after the War of the Destroyer’s Resurrection in which one crown prince threatened to disrupt the peace on Lodoss island in order to conquer it.[1]
In anticipation of the first volume's release, publisher Kadokawa had all 13 episodes of the 1990 OVA played on Japanese video-sharing website Niconico in one go, on 29 July 2019.[2][3] All 27 episodes of the 1998 tv series were broadcasted over the span of 3 days, also on Niconico, starting 1 August 2019.[2][4]
