Redon (レードン, Rēdon) is the main character of the Crystania novels, OVA series and movie. The son of Lord Haven and Lady Meira, Redon is the exiled prince of the country of Da’nan.

Personality[]

Redon is very sensitive and impulsive. He has a strong attachment to his friends, both humans and animals, and hates and fears death, with threats or occurrences of death driving him to protect his friends and often to tears. As an outsider to Crystania, he is frequently upset by the way its world works, or rejects it, particularly evident in his reaction to Barbas' offer to give him power and the fates of Irim and Kirim.

His personality in the novels differs greatly, as he is more ambitious and attempts to change the ways of life of the people of Crystania.

History[]

Redon is the son of Lord Haven and Lady Meira of Da'nan and grew up a prince. He presumably knew both Kwairde and Nasare from a young age. In addition to his human friends, he has a strong bond with his pet dog and his horse, Grabia.

He likely developed what appears to be his fear and hatred of death as a young child, when a family pet, a cat, died. Though his parents assured him that all living things eventually die, his reaction to viewing this event in the Chaos World suggests he still hasn't outgrown his fear.

After his father and mother were massacred in an attack on the royal castle in Da'nan, Redon, extremely distraught and upset by the loss of his parents, vowed revenge. He responded to the call of Barbas, the god of Crystania, causing the Gods' Wall to open a path where he, Nasare, Aderishia, and Kwairde can enter, accompanied by Raifan and Obier.

Redon traveled to Crystania hoping to find out who called him, but was quickly met with violence when attacked by lizard men. After the battle, Obier gave him his father's sword, prompting an angry outburst.

Redon and his companions next interfere in a battle between Sheru and her companions Boakes and Jenoba against another troupe of lizard men led by Rio. They are shocked to see Boakes morph into lion and some of the men with Rio morph into Lizards. Boakes and Jenoba explain the history of Crystania to Redon and the other outsiders from Da'nan.

Redon's true sensitive nature reemerges when Barbas attacks a nearby village occupied by the group Boakes and Jenoba belong to, the Fang of the Animal. Barbas wipes out the village to demonstrate his power. Redon is thoroughly upset by the senseless destruction and death and even tries to save the enemy commander Rio, though she is later killed defending him and Sheru.

Sheru explains her journey to free the soul of Ashram from Barbas and states that she must do it alone. Redon insists he'll come too, but she tries to shake him off. When his horse, Grabia, returns, he and Sheru ride to Dayton castle on its back.

Grabia jumps down a few ledges, resulting in his death. After taking a brief moment to mourn his friend's death, Redon continues toward the throne room where Barbas is waiting for his answer. Barbas offers Redon all the power he wants to get his revenge if he only kills Sheru, but Redon soundly rejects his offer, instead attempting to kill him. Sheru ends up killing Ashram's body and defeating Barbas, thus saving Redon and the rest of his friends.

After the defeat of Barbas, Redon and his friends Kwairde and Nasare are at relative peace. Redon works in a forge to strengthen weapons. However, all is not well, as Redon has begun hearing things that others don't, and a strange monster attacks the village. An old woman takes him into her hut where he informs her that the Seal is being broken, and that Aderishia, who apparently died in the assault on Dayton castle, is among the sealed individuals. Redon and the others then set out with the twins Irim and Kirim to find Aderishia.

During their journey, they start seeing members of the Protectors of the Seal appearing in front of them and proceeding to die immediately, much to Redon's horror. A sudden tornado summoned by Barbas forces Kwairde to tie them all to a tree. However, Redon sees a man caught in the storm and jumps out to save him. One of the twins tries to stop Redon, but ends up falling into the river. Having rescued the man, Redon jumps in after Irim and brings them to shore, performing CPR to resuscitate them.

The group arrives at the Cave of the Sealed, where they find Aderishia. The Bell of Wakening ringing causes Irim to have a strange reaction, seemingly possessed and then growing into an older young boy. He tells them they must go to the Black Island and Redon and his group follow. On the Black Island, Redon meets up with Obier again, and as the bell shatters, a dome-shaped object descends from it, revealing two doors. Irim walks toward it, stating it is his destiny as a Key of Crystania, and Redon tearfully attempts in vain to free him. Kirim undergoes a similar change to the one Irim had earlier, growing into an older young girl. Though Redon is unable to physically free Irim, he manages to convince Kirim to remain by his side.

At Dayton castle, Redon meets up with Sheru and her companion Yoof. He learns that Sheru is going to the Chaos World and says he will accompany her. In the Chaos World, he is tormented by visions of his subconscious, reliving his fear and trauma surrounding death. He relives the experience of the first death he witnessed as a child, and is saved from losing himself by Kirim.

He meets Sheru in Ashram's "heart castle," where he fights an illusion of Beld made by Barbas while Sheru attempts to get Ashram to remember why they are fighting. They manage to fend off the vision of Beld and Yoof helps them escape. Yoof uses the Chaos Ring to free Ashram's soul and allow him to defeat Barbas, resetting the cycle of Crystania.

Kirim suddenly undergoes another change when they leave Dayton castle, growing white wings and stating that she must carry the wandering souls of Crystania to the afterlife. Redon is upset to see her go, rejecting the way of life on Crystania involving making a promise to a god, but Kirim is happy that Redon taught her and Kirim the importance of living for herself.
