Ruins (ルインズ, Ruinzu) is a servant of the Gods’ King Barbas and captain of the Knights of Darkness. He appears in the three Crystania prequel novels, Legend of Crystania, Legend of the Gods’ King 1 and Legend of the Gods’ King 2.

An almost identical character appears in the anime adaptations of these novels, but his name is Brasto (ブレスト, Buresuto). Like Ruins, Brasto also serves Barbas and commands his Knights of Darkness (in the anime called the Shadow Cavalry or Black Cavalry). Physically, they also look alike.

History[]

Ruins is from Beldia, Crystania. He is part of the People of the Dark, Beldians whose ancestors hail from an island to the north, but travelled to the uncharted lands of Crystania centuries ago. Brasto serves the animal god king Barbas, but is not part of the Tribe of the Fierce Tiger, the tribe dedicated to Barbas that consists of Crystania natives.

Ruins first appears in the latter portion of Legend of Crystania. During the battle of Fort Ungaro, he encounters Redon for the first time and learns Redon was called to Crystania by Barbas. Later, Barbas destroys Fort Ungaro with his divine powers and the Fang of the Animal regroup at Fort Roma for a counter attack. Taking the Beldians by surprise, the mercenaries have the upper hand. Ruins and his Knights of Darkness arrive, but their force is too small to change the tides. Ruins duels Redon, but abandons the duel when he notices the whole battle is lost and takes his leave. This allows Redon, Boakes, Nasare and Sheru to get into Dayton and eventually defeat Barbas.

Some time after Barbas' defeat, Ruins and Grael, the young chieftain of the Tribe of the Fierce Tiger, with some followers, attack the Temple of Myrii, a sacred area for the People of the Dark. Because Ruins is also a descendant of the People of the Dark, this act shows his loyalty to Barbas. The attack, however, is no success and Ruins himself is saved from certain death by Grael and taken back to Dayton Castle after suffering severe wounds from Sheru and Father Vien. After this he began a strange transformation, which appear to be powers given to him by Barbas. Near the end of the Legend of the Gods’ King 2, when Redon, Nasare, Boakes and Kisara reunite with Sheru in Beldia to obtain the Chaos Ring, they encounter Ruins near the Gods’ Wall while on their way back to Crystania. Ruins challenges Redon to a duel; if Ruins wins he will take Redon to Barbas to become Barbas' next vessel. If Redon defeats Ruins, then Ruins will let them go. Despite Ruins' recent upgrades he loses the duel to Redon and dies. before his death, he understands why Barbas chose Redon over him.

In the movie and OVA[]

Ruins appears to be called Brasto (ブレスト, Buresuto) in the anime adaptations. He is the leader of Barbas' Shadow Cavalry and resides in Dayton castle. When Barbas wipes out a village occupied by the Fang of the Animal, the leaders of the Fang of the Animal prepare a counter-move. Eventually they reach Dayton castle and Obier, Nasare and Jenoba enter it, but are welcomed by Brasto. Obier and Brasto do battle, while Jenoba and Nasare continue to find Barbas who resides elsewhere in the castle. By the time the battle against Barbas reaches its end Brasto is defeated by Obier.
