Sword World Novel: The Freeman’s Sorrow 1 (ソード・ワールド・ノベル 自由人の歎き（上）, sōdo wārudo noberu jiyujin no nageki (ue)) is a Japanese light novel written by Hide Shirai with illustrations by Jun Suemi.
The novel is connected to the videogame Sword World SFC2: Legend of the Ancient Giants, the audio drama Sword World: Legend of the Ancient Giants and the short stories novels Scharaka Adventure Corps, Heading South, A Night of Shining Eyes and The Mask of the Gate Demon.
The story takes place a dozen years after the annex of Reide in 503 NRC, so around 515 NRC.
