The Black Knight is a light novel by Ryo Mizuno focusing on the backstory of Ashram, including his first meeting with Pirotess. It is one of two spin-off novels from the main Record of Lodoss War novels, the other being High Elf Forest: Deedlit’s Tale.
The Black Knight was first released in 1995 in a hardcover edition. Yutaka Izubuchi provided two illustrations for the novel: the cover and an intertitle page with Pirotess. In 1998 The Black Knight was released a second time, arguably to coincide with the release of the TV series. The re-release featured a new cover and new illustrations, all drawn by Masato Natsumoto, who also drew the Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight manga.
The novel connects Mizuno’s two major worlds at the time: the world of Lodoss and the world of Crystania.
