The Unicorn Maiden is a manga adaptation of the story of the same name from the light novel A Leprechaun’s Tears, a story bundle novel in the Sword World Short Stories light novel series. The original story was written by Ryo Mizuno and the manga adaptation was done by Kunio Aoki. The Unicorn Maiden is Aoki's first manga.

The Unicorn Maiden is the second manga released in the Sword World setting, following 1994's Lacquer-black Curse. Two more Sword World manga followed in the mid to late 2000's.

Synopsis[]

Judith is a forest ranger of the Ramliearth guardians of the forest, a group of people who guard the Unicorn Forest against poachers and other thugs. She is also a unicorn maiden, a woman who has a special bond with a unicorn—in her case Anwen—and can communicate with them. Unicorns may pick a maiden of their choosing and will henceforth be inseperable from them. Somewhere around the area, a mysterious man seems to have a special interest in unicorn maidens and is willing to pay a high price for them. Is he after the bond the maidens and unicorns share with one another?

Notes[]

  • The manga takes place in the year 507 NRC. This can be deduced from the thugs in the early pages of the story saying it is one day after the fifth centennial of the inauguration of Ramliearth. The Sword World World Guide says the founding of Ramliearth happened in the year 7 NRC, thus 500 years later would be 507 NRC.
  • The manga was originally released as The Unicorn Maiden ユニコーンの乙女[1]. In 2013 the digital version was released under the slightly different title of Sword World: The Unicorn Maiden.[2]
