Record of Lodoss War Wiki

The War of the Gods was one of the many wars fought on Forcelia and probably the first war that ever took place on that world. The war marked the end of the Age of the Gods, as no god is said to have survived the war. At the end of the war Kardis, the goddess of destruction, cursed the land. Before the curse could spread, Marfa, the goddess of creation, split the cursed part of the land, creating Lodoss island.

What exactly happened during the war is unknown and scholars from the various continents of Forcelia each have different beliefs. For example, the people of Alecrast make no mention of Marfa's creation of Lodoss in their theories on the War of the Gods.

History[]

The gods were the first beings on the world of Forcelia and responsible for creating the world. During the creation of the world, the gods divided into camps of light and darkness, and began to quarrel. Pharis, the god of light, wished to create a world governed by the laws of light, while Phalaris, the god of darkness, envisioned a world of complete freedom.[1] This small dispute eventually escalated and led to war. Both sides summoned dragon lords, fire-spewing beasts much stronger than the gods, to destroy the opposing gods.

The god of war Myrii and the god of fortune Cha Za were among the gods who sided with Pharis, and Myrii led the gods of light into battle. Their subordinate gods Bruza and Sumash, however, did not follow their superiors. Cha Za's subordinate Sumash opted to remain neutral and Bruza, a lazy god by nature, arrived too late, lost sight of his master and had no choice but to join the neutral gods.[2][3] A number of other gods also decided to remain neutral.

At the end of the battle only two gods remained, Marfa of the gods of light and Kardis of the gods of darkness. In her final moments, Kardis, the goddess of destruction, cursed the land. Before the curse could spread, Marfa, the goddess of creation, used her last strength to separate the already cursed land from the continent, thereby creating Lodoss the "Accursed Island". With Kardis' and Marfa's passing, all the gods of light and darkness were destroyed. With the partison gods gone, some of the dragon lords turned to the neutral gods, who had gathered under Feness, the younger brother of Pharis. Feness led the neutral gods to a continent in the south,[4] protected by Bruza, who used his spear to defeat many dragon lords.[2] Once the neutral gods set foot on the continent, they discarded their bodies and took the form of animals to hide from the dragon lords. They became so-called "animal gods", and continue to exist on Crystania to this day, unbeknownst to the people from the other continents of Forcelia.

With the gods either destroyed or gone, the dragon lords began killing each other until only one remained. Deeply wounded, the last dragon lord went in hibernation and has remained in such state ever since the conclusion of the war.

Notes[]

  • It is believed that Arkeno, a god who had attempted to master time, predicted the War of the Gods.[5]
