Woodchuck (ウッド・チャック, Uddo chakku), nicknamed Wood and whose real name is Jay Lancard,[1] is a thief who is the last member to join Parn's group. Woodchuck spent 22 years of his life in prison and laments the loss of those years.

He certainly knows a lot of the tricks of the skulduggery trade, including loaded dice and knife throwing. He actually makes himself very useful once Parn releases him from the dungeon of Fortress Myce.

Woodchuck becomes the new host of Karla after Leylia is freed. In the OVA series Woodchuck is taken against his will, but in the manga Woodchuck goes willingly.

Personality[]

Woodchuck acts carefree and unbothered, but due to his skills as a thief, is much more observant than he lets on. He greatly regrets the loss of his youth and is prone to getting possessed by greed. He is also resentful, envying how the rest of Parn's group gets the attention and credit for saving the princess, while he gets no credit or accolades.

In the 1990 OVA anime, he is more of an ally to Parn's group, even accompanying Parn and Deedlit to fight in the War of Heroes, but is more neutral in the novels.

History[]

Not much is known about Woodchuck's youth, but at the age of seventeen, after getting caught breaking and entering into a wealthy Alanian noble's estate, he was sentenced to thirty years in prison by King Kadomos VII, who then released him upon the birth of the prince. At the time of his release, he had served twenty-two years of his sentence. When he left, he attempted to reintegrate himself into the Thieves' Guild as a leader, but had no way to pay the high fee. As a result, he is forced to look for companions who can help him out on an important job assigned to him by the master of the guild.

He joins up with Parn's group at the Crystal Forest inn, quickly convincing them to help join him in getting rid of Marmo troops who have invaded an estate outside of Allan.
